Metal: An Inventory

by Sharon Mollerus

salvaged soda cans tinkling down a trash bag
soup tins kicked along the street by a bitter wind
cart wheels lurching on the sidewalk
careening shoeless skate wheels
loose ball-bearings and broken bike spokes
can opener with nose point lopped off
beaten copper pans and battered iron pots
faceless carcasses of wrist-watches
choker chain from an abandoned dog
surgical steel posts impaled in tongues
girls drumming braceleted hands on the ballcourt fence
propellers whipping up a starless night
savage silver spikes on a boy’s leather belt
locked handcuffs biting twisting wrists
sweat-dried cold sheets kicked off and caught fast on rusted box springs
